Our first day of the road trip was uneventful, and that was just as well. I will make up for the lack of pictures in this post by just blabbing about mostly uninteresting things.
Last night, Patty and I stayed up a bit later than planned. so we decided to leave this morning a bit later than planned, and it all worked out. We left around 11am. We spent most of the morning listening to an audiobook, and much of the afternoon listening to music and napping. Ironically, the most skilled napper in the family was unable to nap, since I was driving.
There were probably only 2 noteworthy things about our drive today:
1) One interesting thing about today's drive was the weather. After a sunny and clear morning, we drove through four separate rainstorms in western Illinois and Iowa. Two were pretty intense, but all were short-lived. I was expecting 90 degree weather all day, but by afternoon, it was only in the 70's in Iowa and Nebraska. By the time we arrived in Lincoln, it was back up in the 80's.
2) The other unique fact about our trip today was that we only made one stop between Chicago and Lincoln (around 525 miles). One of the kdis had to use the restroom at around 2pm, and so we stopped for gas and a restroom break. We had already eaten lunch (sandwiches in the car), so we had enough gas to make it to our destination. I seem to remember on previous roadtrips (both as a child and adult) that there would be at least 3 stops per day, even if it was just for gas. I don't know if it was or our 20-gallon gas tank or improved efficiency (combined with impressive bladder control), but we'll make really good time if we only stop once per day.
Hopefully the kids are worn out from swimming in the hotel pool. We'll try and set out early again tomorrow. I'll let you know how that goes, but I'd better get to sleep soon.
