| You'd think these "Boulder Canyon" chips would deal with the high altitude better. |
Driving had been particularly good (fast) in Nebraska and Colorado, since the speed limit was 75 in both states. Plus, the route from Ogallala to Denver was nearly deserted. At times, we were literally the only car for miles. I think I was on cruise control for nearly 3 straight hours undisturbed (I won't mention what speed I had the cruise control set at).
After Denver, it got much more exciting and scenic, but not all the excitement was good. Mountain driving can be a bit daunting, with the steep inclines/declines, and the crazy locals who want to speed right through you. Plus, it also rained on and off, sometimes heavily during our drive through the mountains. The kids were awed with the mountains... for about 40 minutes. Then there was road construction for a portion of the way. It was relatively brief, no more than 10 miles, but only one lane meant waiting behind slow trucks and RV's.
At some point, Abby woke up from a nap and decided she was carsick and promptly "lost her lunch." Patty was quick to get back there, but let's just say we had already lost containment. That meant an extra stop in Vail to clean Abby and the car up. Yuck.
In the end, we drove out of the high mountains after having seen some amazing scenery (pictures to come later), but both Patty and I were pretty worn out from the experience.
Tomorrow (Wednesday) is not going to be a big driving day. We're going to make our way to Moab, Utah, and some of the surrounding parks. Tomorrow night we'll stay in Moab, and head out towards Nevada on Thursday.
This was supposed to be a quick post, but ended up being long with no pictures! I'll add just one, of the bag of chips Patty bought in Ogallala this morning. High altitudes mean lower pressure outside, and this bag looked ready to burst when we were up in the mountains.
But as I said, we're pretty tired, so no full blog w/pictures today. Patty started, but now she's sleeping. I'm going to sleep now too. It's actually 1:30am Mountain Time here, but I'll date this yesterday so that it registers as a Tuesday blog.
Glad you guys are tracking your travel!! Seems very exciting and the kids look like they are having a ton of fun! More pictures please! Please tell Emma "Happy Birthday" for us!
